At Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads (Habitat SHR), the power of women working together extends far beyond the construction site. The Women Build Club (WBC) brings together women from all walks of life who share a passion for philanthropy, learning new skills, and strengthening their community one home, one friendship, and one opportunity at a time.
Habitat SHR’s annual Women Build Weeks events are powerful, hands-on initiatives that bring together hundreds of women and volunteers to help build homes and transform lives across our community. The Women Build Club extends that spirit of giving year-round. It’s a membership-based group that keeps the energy and impact of Women Build alive long after the events end, offering members ongoing opportunities to connect, give back, and grow. Through volunteer build days, networking socials, and skill-building workshops, the Women Build Club blends service with sisterhood, creating a space where women can make a difference while also building confidence, leadership, and lasting friendships.
“Women Build is more than just construction, it’s connection and community,” says April Miller, co-chair of the WBC committee. “The Women Build Club brings together women who not only share common values but also a deep commitment to giving back. It’s an opportunity to build confidence, forge meaningful relationships and witness the direct impact of their collective philanthropy across our community.”
The Women Build Club welcomes members from all backgrounds including business professionals, civic leaders, students, retirees, and anyone eager to roll up their sleeves for a good cause. No construction experience is required; Habitat’s experienced “Red Hat” volunteers and site leaders provide all the training and guidance needed to make the day safe, fun, and rewarding.
Each member’s annual contribution directly supports Habitat SHR’s mission to provide affordable housing solutions across South Hampton Roads. In addition to building new homes, the Club’s efforts also help fund Habitat’s Home Repair Program, which assists veterans, elderly and disabled income-constrained homeowners with critical home improvements like accessibility ramps and safety modifications.
Through the Women Build Club, Habitat SHR continues to amplify the voice and contributions of women in the movement for affordable housing. Together, members are helping to transform neighborhoods, empower families, and prove that when women come together, incredible things can happen.
The Women Build Club’s next social will be held on Tuesday, October 28th, at Zeiders American Dream Theater in Virginia Beach. This event is open to current and prospective Women Build Club members and is a perfect opportunity to learn more, meet other members, and get inspired to get involved. At Habitat SHR, every home starts with hope and the Women Build Club is helping make that hope stronger, one hammer, one heart, and one woman at a time.
