1700 Brewing Company is a nano brewery, 100% Military Vet-owned and operated. Since they brew in small batches, there are always a variety of styles in rotation. They serve everything from traditional styles to experimental brews.
What prompted you to open a brewery as opposed to another type of business? Was it always something you wanted to do?
We all fell in love with beer and how to brew it when we were stationed in Germany and Belgium. Once a few of us got back to the states, we decided to learn how to brew and dreamt of providing the world with styles that we enjoyed so much overseas. As the industry grew and more styles were available, our passion to open a brewery evolved into providing a welcoming environment along with great beer.
Your brewery hosts a lively slate of events and activities. What is it about your company’s culture that fosters such a festive atmosphere? Our staff and regulars make you feel at home here, and we’re small so you don’t get that cooperate feeling when you walk in. Just about anytime you can hang out and talk to the owners and talk to the brewers about beer, business, or just life in general.
One of your slogans is “Every pour is a salute to our Heros.” How does 1700 Brewing support our active duty, and retired men and women in uniform? How do you and your customers “pay it forward”? Every one of our owners are retired military so we have close ties to local military com-munities and organizations. Whenever we’re able to provide any type of support to our local military, we jump at the chance. Also, when you come into the brewery and hang out, you realize that majority of our regulars are Vets and we love to share “war” sto-ries, so the comradery is instantaneous.
Using our “Pay it forward” beer donation tally board, anyone may gift a brew to a single branch of service, or to teachers and first responders. When one of those heroes walks in the door, their first beer is free, as it’s comes from the donations. Matter of fact, on Veterans Day, we clear the board and give out all of those donated beers to every vet who walks through the door. So far we’ve given out about 3,000 beers.
In closing, what message would you like to share with our veterans and active duty military members?
We have over 100 years of military service between us, so we understand first hand about their everyday stresses and commitments. If we can provide a sense of relief and appreci-ation for their service in the form hospital-ity and a beer, then we’re proud to do so.
