Each year, CoVaBiz Magazine asks our business community to nominate young professionals who are leading the way and making a difference in Coastal Virginia. As always, the honorees selected this year came from an impressive pool of nominations and were chosen for demonstrated excellence in their professional endeavors, and for the significant contributions they’ve made to the broader community. We were particularly impressed by the range of businesses and organizations our honorees represent, and by the wide variety of ways our honorees engage with their local communities through mentoring and volunteer efforts. Congratulations to all!

About the CoVaBIZ NextGen Awards
To choose the NextGen Awards honorees, CoVaBIZ held an online nomination period in which exceptional young professionals were nominated by a colleague, relative or friend, or nominated themselves. All nominations were reviewed by a diverse panel. We thank Austin Gregory and Jinal Kothari, two of last year’s honorees who served on this year’s panel. Selections were made based on demonstrated business excellence, community involvement and civic contributions in the

Michael Evans
Michael Evans
Director of Business Intelligence
Hampton Roads Alliance
Michael Evans is the Director of Business Intelligence at the Hampton Roads Alliance, where he leads research and advisory services to support regional growth, investment, and competitiveness. A Coastal Virginia native and graduate of William & Mary and UNC Chapel Hill, Michael is reshaping how analysis and strategy drive investment, policy, and economic development. He serves on multiple civic boards and regional committees and is passionate about helping businesses thrive and creating lasting community impact through public service, inclusive growth, and values-driven leadership.
Michael says: So far in my career, I am most proud of… the moments when a project I supported breaks ground. When the steel goes up, the job postings go live, and opportunity becomes real for a community, that’s when the impact of the work truly hits. I take the greatest pride not in the work itself, but in what it makes possible: new jobs, thriving businesses, and a stronger future for the residents of Coastal Virginia. My next big goal is… to continue growing as a regional leader, expanding my impact, assuming greater strategic influence, and shaping bold strategies that help communities thrive. I’m committed to staying at the intersection of research, leadership, and public service, where I can influence lasting economic opportunity. The next chapter is about thinking bigger and deepening the value I deliver to others. The best piece of advice I have ever received is…Lead with generosity, especially in your career. Share what you know, open doors for others, and create value before expecting anything in return. The most meaningful opportunities often come from what you give, not what you ask for. Something not many people know about me is that… I’m a bit of a watch nerd. I’m part of a local watch collecting club, and I love the craftsmanship, history, and storytelling behind each timepiece.

Holding a master’s degree and currently pursuing my Ph.D., I bring advanced expertise to the design of inclusive workplace practices, talent development strategies, and culture-shaping initiatives. Beyond the organization, I’ve led transformative community events—including a celebrity cook-off that raised over $10,000 for hunger relief, demonstrating how visionary leadership can drive meaningful, measurable impact both within and beyond the workplace. My next big goal is…to advance Human Resources as a powerful force for building cultures rooted in respect, fairness, and equal opportunity. Through my Ph.D. research, I aim to develop a groundbreaking framework that connects inclusive leadership practices with meaningful community impact. The best piece of advice I have ever received is… Leadership is not about status or titles but about driving transformative impact. Something not many people know about me is that… I had the privilege of planning the Birth of a Nation movie premiere in Norfolk—an event designed not only to screen a film but to foster critical dialogue on race, media, and social justice. Rachel Harner
Rachel Harner
Co-founder, Connected Wellness Group & Licensed Professional Counselor
Connected Wellness Group
Rachel Harner co-founded Connected Wellness Group, a trauma-informed mental health practice, in the heart of Norfolk after operating a successful solo private practice for almost a decade specializing in trauma-informed care. Rachel believes connection and community are integral to both individual mental wellbeing and developing mental health care models that are sustainable, equitable, and accessible. She sought to create a company that both serves clients through evidenced-based, best practice therapy while supporting therapists through employment that empowers career growth, encourages personal life satisfaction, and prioritizes rest. Rachel has worked to build community connections, host free workshops, and offer low-cost support groups as creative business approaches to caring for the community. Rachel is a member of the Virginia Counseling Association and the American Counseling Association.
Rachel says: So far in my career, I am most proud of…the team we’ve built at Connected Wellness Group in just 3 years. It is a privilege to work alongside therapists who are brilliant in their respective specialties and practice with integrity and heart. Our team is collaborative, supportive, fun, and (though I may be biased) the best in Coastal Virginia. My next big goal is… to deepen our commitment to community care and connection. We recently took part in Hampton Roads PrideFest, and the experience was meaningful, fun, and energizing. I’m excited to explore more opportunities to engage in community events, offer support beyond the traditional therapy setting, and help expand access to mental health care. I believe the future of the field lies in community collaboration and creative approaches to accessibility. The best piece of advice I have ever received is…Everything is negotiable. It’s a phrase I learned from my dad. Hearing it from a young age, especially as a woman, shaped my belief that I have the power to advocate for myself and to honor my intrinsic worth. And if I can negotiate, others can too! I honor the value others bring to the table because the table is big enough for all of us. Something not many people know about me is that…I’m a first-generation college graduate. UVA 2008. Wahoowa!

My wife Leanne and I are raising three amazing kids—Milo (3), George (2), and Naomi (9 months)—and I wouldn’t trade that adventure for anything. The best piece of advice I have ever received…is from Teddy Roosevelt: “No man has the moral right to withhold his support from an organization that is striving to improve conditions within his sphere.” I take that to heart, whether it’s in the way we serve our clients, support our team, or give back to our community, I believe in always working to improve the conditions around me.
