The Prissy Pickle Company
Tangy and sweet, or with a touch of heat, Prissy Pickles of Virginia Beach are long-time favorites of the Hampton Roads and Richmond area farm market scenes. Four generations of women carry forward the beloved family recipes and pickling traditions that began with great-grandmother Carrie Compton Elder’s turn-of-the-century special spice blends and methods. They currently offer four versions: Bread & Butter pickles and Southern Sweet pickle chips, both available in plain and habanero versions. To keep up with demand, the company recently completed construction on a new commercial kitchen, and they’ve created buzz around a dill version that will be introduced in the not-too-distant future. Prissy Pickles are sold at The Norfolk Navy Exchange, and at NEX Oceana, and they’re available by calling Prissy Pickles directly. Perfect for picnics and grilling season, Prissy Pickles are not just for burger-topping; they’ll enliven your deviled eggs, potato salad and homemade tartar sauce. Check out their website for tasty recipes.

The Poddery: Studio and Gardens
For over 30 years, Karen and David Podd have made their living creating functional and decorative handmade pottery at their studio in Foster, a small town in Mathews County, on the Middle Peninsula. Located along a country road, the studio and gardens are definitely a day trip-worthy destination. The Podd’s showroom is filled with displays of pottery, some in abstract, earthy textural designs, or inspired by Chesapeake Bay flora and fauna. From cups and colanders, to dishes and serving sets, all functional pottery is microwave, dishwasher, and oven-safe. Want home décor with a coastal theme? Check out their tiles, drawer pulls, bird houses, and wall art. They’re open year-round, but visit their website and Facebook page for special events and studio tours.
