On April 4, Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA (MZB) received a 2017 Governor's Environmental Excellence Award at the 28th Environment Virginia Symposium at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va.
MZB received a Silver Award from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality for its sustainable manufacturing pactices and leadership at its Suffolk, Va. facility. MZB was specifically recognized for its launch of the PURPOD100™ single-serve coffee pod that is 100 percent compostable as certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) to break down in commercial composting facilities within 100 days. The PURPOD100™ is made from more than 90 percent renewable resouces. With every 100,000 compostable coffee pods sent to composting after use, one ton of coffee grounds (dry weight) or two tons of coffee grounds (wet weight) is diverted from landfills.
Senior Brand Manager at Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA Sarah Cunningham spoke on behalf of the company and the award, "Our company prides itself on the many examples of our commitment to sustainable manufacturing and the responsible stewardship of our raw material – coffee – from seed to cup." She further added, "This award recognizes the hard work and creativity of our employees and the support of our vendors and retailers. It will serve to encourage us to do more in the years to come."
