Introducing Our 2026 NextGen Honorees

Introducing Our 2026 NextGen Honorees

Each year, CoVaBIZ Magazine asks our business community to nominate young professionals who are leading the way and making a difference in Coastal Virginia. As always, the honorees selected this year came from an impressive pool of nominations and were chosen for demonstrated excellence in their professional endeavors, as well as for the significant contributions they have made to the broader community. Congratulations to all!

About the CoVaBIZ NextGen Awards To choose the 2026 NextGen Awards honorees, CoVaBIZ held an online nomination period in which exceptional young professionals were nominated by a colleague, relative or friend, or nominated themselves. All nominations were reviewed by a dedicated panel—including Yiorgos “George” Koliopoulos, a NextGen honoree last year. Selections were made based on demonstrated business excellence, community involvement, and civic contributions in the Coastal Virginia region. We also extend special thanks to the kind people at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, who let us borrow their beautiful new space at 5811 Wesleyan Drive in Virginia Beach for our photo shoot.

Austin Bouthillet

Austin Bouthillet
Lead Videographer
Consociate Media

Gloucester Point

Austin Bouthillet serves as lead videographer at Consociate Media, where he leads video production initiatives that help organizations communicate their stories with clarity and impact. He oversees projects from concept to completion, partnering with clients and creative teams to develop strategic visual content for events, brand storytelling, and digital marketing campaigns. A self-taught videographer with a business background, Austin combines creative vision with technical expertise to deliver high-quality productions that advance organizational goals. His leadership, collaborative approach, and commitment to excellence have made him a trusted creative partner across a diverse range of industries.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…the impact my work has recently had helping nonprofits and organizations such as VersAbility Resources, Habitat for Humanity, Edmarc, and the Virginia Opioid Abatement Authority drive people to action through videography. It’s work that runs the gamut, from raising awareness, to encouraging support, to helping people better understand a complex issue. I am proud to create visuals that do more than simply look good. At its best, storytelling can truly move people to inspire meaningful change.

My next big goal is…to step into a leadership role at Consociate Media and continue to grow the video department. Video has a way to reach and move people in meaningful ways, ways other mediums cannot, especially when coupled with the other storytelling and communications methods Consociate specializes in. Growing the video department means we can build a larger team laser focused on world-class storytelling that can produce even more high-quality video and creative content that delivers real value for the people and organizations we serve.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…to listen with the intent to learn something, not to reply. No matter a person’s career, role, or status, they know something you do not. Treat each conversation as a chance to learn something new. When we are only focused on sharing our own thoughts, we can miss the wisdom, perspective, and lived experienc e of others.

Something not many people know about me is that…I’ve lived with a stutter my entire life. While it has presented its share of challenges, it has also shaped who I am, teaching me resilience, patience, empathy, and the value of thoughtful communication. It has also developed and strengthened my appreciation for the power of authentic storytelling and meaningful connection.

Sam Dreyfus

Sam Dreyfus
Executive Vice President
ECPI University

Virginia Beach

As executive vice president of ECPI University, Sam Dreyfus helps lead the university’s strategic vision and operations, with a focus on expanding access to career-focused education, strengthening employer partnerships, and leveraging technology to improve student success. A third-generation leader at ECPI, he is committed to preparing graduates for today’s workforce while helping shape the future of higher education. Passionate about the future of Coastal Virginia, Sam is active in regional workforce development, economic growth, and civic initiatives. He serves on the board of Junior Achievement and supports organizations including 757 Angels, the Sentara Behavioral Health Consortium, and Career Education Colleges and Universities.

So far in my career, I am most proud of...helping carry forward ECPI University’s mission of providing students with the best pathway into meaningful careers in the programs and regions we serve. The most rewarding part of this work is seeing students from all different backgrounds reach goals they may have once believed were out of reach. As a third-generation leader at ECPI, I feel a deep responsibility to honor what has been built while continuing to make it stronger for the students, employers, and communities we serve.

My next big goal is…to help make Coastal Virginia one of the country’s leading regions for workforce innovation. Education, business, and local government don’t always move in the same direction, and I believe there’s real room for us to work together on talent shortages and modernization through new technology like AI. I want ECPI University to keep leading that shift without ever losing sight of the students, since preparing them well is what strengthens the entire region.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…that an organization is only as strong as its people. Investing in people, supporting them, and creating an environment where they can do their best work is paramount to long-term success.

Something not many people know about me is that…people are often surprised to learn that, despite being fairly reserved, I’m always the first to grab the microphone at karaoke.

Lisa Flittner

Lisa Flittner
Assistant Project Manager
Skanska USA Civil

Virginia Beach

Flittner joined Skanska USA Civil in 2015 following her college graduation and has risen rapidly through the ranks of one of the world’s largest construction firms. As an Assistant Project Manager based in Skanska’s Virginia Beach office, she now oversees all aspects of major civil construction projects, from budgeting and scheduling to team leadership and plan implementation, serving as the primary point of contact for Skanska clients throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Flittner has led three landmark Virginia infrastructure projects. She is currently finishing the $85 million NIT North Wharf Improvements Project for the Port of Virginia, part of a $650 million master program to modernize one of the nation’s fifth-largest container ports.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…completing the $223 million Portsmouth Marine Terminal (PMT) project on time and under budget. The PMT Project was a prime example of teamwide communication and collaboration. A true testament of what can be achieved when owner and contractor are aligned on a single goal.

My next big goal is…to continue growing as a leader and delivering successful infrastructure projects in the region. I want to step into a mentorship role and continue to develop the upcoming generation of engineers entering the construction industry.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…train your replacement. You cannot grow into your next role if there is no one to backfill your position. Embrace being replaced as that means you are moving on to bigger and better things.

Something not many people know about me is that…I crochet amigurumi in my spare time. I find it fascinating that you can make almost anything out of a crochet hook and yarn.

Ariana Foster

Ariana Foster
Founder/Digital Media Coordinator
Foster Beauty/Chrysler Museum of Art

Norfolk

Ariana Foster is the founder of Foster Beauty, a creative production agency specializing in fashion show production, talent booking, and content creation serving local businesses, creatives, and organizations across Hampton Roads. She also serves as Digital Media Coordinator for the Chrysler Museum of Art, managing social media strategy and content production that connects broader audiences with the museum’s exhibitions and community initiatives. A Veteran U.S. Navy Mass Communications Specialist, Ariana also serves as Vice President of Arts Connect Virginia, PR Officer of Gen MOCA, and is a member of the Downtown 100 and the Hampton Roads Gen Z Commission.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…building something from nothing. When I relocated to Coastal Virginia while serving in the Navy during the COVID-19 pandemic, I knew no one. Using the power of social media, I was determined to find my community, even if that meant building one myself. Over the years, my work has connected me with so many talented individuals, established organizations, and friends that I feel blessed to collaborate with. I’m less proud of any single accolade and prouder of the ripple effect of one decision to build an arts/fashion community that has transformed my life and opened doors for many.

My next big goal is…discovering more opportunities to bring value from other areas back to Hampton Roads. The more I travel, the more impressed I am by the abundance of talent here and the untapped potential for creative professions and industries in this region. Our region has everything it needs to be a serious creative hub, and I hope to be part of making that case.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…“you can’t do it all in one day.” As an ambitious person with a never-ending to-do list, I’ve carried immense stress in periods where I never felt I was doing enough. Accepting that everything I will achieve over my lifetime won’t be complete by end of today is both reassuring and validating.

Something not many people know about me is that…as a young child, my grandmother, an artist, had me build her websites and manage her social media. The work I do today I have essentially been doing my whole life!

Shayla Hayward-Lundy

Shayla Hayward-Lundy
Therapist & Nonprofit Fundraiser
Therapy with Shayla, LLC

Virginia Beach

Shayla is a therapist working with nonprofits and healthcare organizations to provide art therapy and substance use counseling to clients navigating addiction, chronic stress, trauma, and severe mental illness. She holds a master’s degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School and has certifications in yoga, mindfulness, and brain injury care. Her hardest-working employee, Buttercup, is a certified therapy dog who volunteers throughout Coastal Virginia. Shayla also has extensive experience in nonprofit fundraising and has worked with national organizations such as Paralyzed Veterans of America and local organizations, including Last Room and Kaizen Adaptive Training.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…thetime and effort I have put into mental health and medical philanthropy. It can be easy to dismiss small wins, but every effort adds up, and maintaining that perspective is important. As a therapist, I’ve done my best to support and care for people from all walks of life. At the same time, fundraising, nonprofit board service, and a gubernatorial appointment have given me opportunities to contribute to lasting change in communities. While these roles have differed in scope and responsibility, they have all been driven by the same purpose: to contribute to something bigger than myself.

My next big goal is…finishing my doctorate. It’s a long journey, but my parents taught me the value of an education. Millions of women and girls around the world never get the chance to go to school, let alone earn a degree. Remembering that motivates me to make the most of the blessings and opportunities I’ve been given. After graduation, I want to partner with more nonprofits and churches to help build sustainable, free community programs that support mental health and well-being.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…to knock on every door. Some doors won’t open, no matter how hard you try or how ready you think you are. But you never know which one will open and change the rest of your life. Living out this advice has led to plenty of rejection, but it has also led me to where I am today.

Something not many people know about me is that…after a nerve injury, I relearned how to ice skate with the hockey players at Warrior for Life Fund. Now, I spend my free time with the figure skaters at Tidewater Figure Skating Club. As with many athletes, I’ve had to work through physical, psychological, and emotional setbacks, but it’s the encouragement of this community that keeps me coming back.

Dr. Sonia Hepburn

Dr. Sonia Hepburn
Medical Doctor
Virginia Oncology Associates

Port Warwick and Williamsburg

Dr. Sonia Hepburn is board certified in internal medicine, hematology, and oncology. She completed her fellowship at the University of Chapell Hill and joined Virginia Oncology Associates in 2020. She serves as a member of VOA’s Joint Policy Board, as the Patient Experience chair on the Inclusion Counsil, the Advanced Practice Practitioner Physician Champion, and is on the Wellness Committee. She is a board member for Here For the Girls, an organization empowering women with breast cancer, and is a board of director for the Hampton Roads Cancer Care Foundation, an organization that raises money to help those with hematologic or cancer diagnosis.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…working toward improving patient experience at Virginia Oncology Associates. A cancer diagnosis is very challenging and can impact the physical, financial, and mental health of a patient. I improved operations to make it easier to communicate with the care team, lead a team to create a food pantry to ensure food insecurity does not impact patient care, and am part of the wellness committee as physician wellbeing is critical in ensuring both patients and staff are all well cared for.

My next big goal is…growing my leadership skills to rise to the challenge of running an organization and then use those skills to help the next generation of physicians become leaders at VOA and in the community.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…“Great things in life take time.” It has helped me push forward during those times where it seems easier to give up.

Something not many people know about me is that…Spanish was my first language. I learned English by watching Sesame Street and practicing with the kids around me. I have two young children and a very supportive husband who motivate me to be my best self.

Sarah Hughes

Sarah Hughes
President & Chief Executive Officer
VisitNorfolk

Norfolk

Sarah Hughes was promoted in July to president and chief executive officer of VisitNorfolk. She previously was vice president of marketing and communications, where she led destination marketing, communications, brand strategy, and visitor services to strengthen Norfolk’s visitor economy and elevate the city’s reputation as a premier travel destination. She earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Old Dominion University and will complete the Certified Destination Management Executive (CDME) program through Destinations International in 2026. Hughes serves as vice chair of the Coastal Virginia Tourism Alliance, is a member of the Hampton Roads Chamber Communications Committee, and enjoys mentoring emerging professionals while helping advance collaboration across the region’s tourism industry.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…connecting people and building relationships that make our community stronger. Tourism is an industry built on collaboration, and every success is made possible by partners who care deeply about where they live and work. Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to champion local businesses and attractions while working alongside passionate people who want to see Norfolk thrive. As new opportunities and challenges have come my way, I’ve stayed grounded in the belief that leadership is about listening, earning trust, and helping people find common ground.

My next big goal is…to continue growing as a leader while helping strengthen the relationships that move our community forward. I want to foster collaboration across organizations, mentor future leaders and create opportunities for people to work together in meaningful ways. Tourism has the power to support local businesses, strengthen communities, and create experiences that leave a lasting impression. If I can help make that happen, I’ll consider it a meaningful accomplishment.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…to stay humble, stay curious, and never stop listening. No matter your role or experience, there is always something to learn from everyone around you. The best ideas often come from asking thoughtful questions, embracing different perspectives, and creating space for others to be heard.

Something not many people know about me is that…I’m on a mission to find great dim sum wherever I travel. I’ve followed that tradition from Toronto and London to Auckland, New Zealand, always searching for my next favorite dumpling.

Brion Humphrey

Brion Humphrey
Video Broadcast & Public Relations Specialist
Sumitomo Drive Technologies

Chesapeake

Brion Humphrey is a public relations specialist for Sumitomo Drive Technologies, where he supports media relations, strategic communications, corporate storytelling, video production, and community engagement. He helps translate complex industrial and engineering topics into clear content for internal, external, and trade audiences. Brion holds a bachelor of science in interdisciplinary studies from Norfolk State University and is pursuing a master of arts in communication with a public relations concentration at Southern New Hampshire University. He serves as vice chair of WHRO’s Next Gen Collective, is a former public relations chair for Hampton Roads Black Media Professionals, and serves as youth pastor at Kingdom Life Church in Chesapeake.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…strengthening the relationship between Sumitomo Drive Technologies and the community we serve. I have helped create opportunities for students, workforce partners, nonprofit organizations, and local leaders to connect with the people behind our work. This includes supporting workforce development, facility tours, community service, and partnerships that introduce young people to manufacturing and engineering careers. I am especially proud of helping highlight Sumitomo Drive Technologies’ sponsorship of a local robotics team and a university boring team. These efforts show a commitment to innovation, education, and the future talent pipeline in Coastal Virginia.

My next big goal is…expanding Sumitomo Drive Technologies’ growing public relations efforts across all U.S. facilities. I want to build stronger local media relationships, highlight the expertise of employees in each market, and create more opportunities to connect with schools, workforce partners, industry organizations, and community leaders. This work will help ensure that each location has a clear voice within its region while supporting a unified national story. I also hope to identify and share more examples of innovation, workforce development, customer support, and community investment that show the full impact of Sumitomo Drive Technologies across the country.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…to seek mentorship in every area where I want to grow. Strong mentors offer perspective, accountability, and encouragement drawn from experience. Their guidance has helped me develop professionally, strengthen my faith, and lead with greater purpose. I have learned that growth becomes intentional when you are willing to listen, ask questions, and learn.

Something not many people know about me is that…I grew up performing tap, ballet, and acting. Those experiences gave me a lasting appreciation for the arts, creativity, and the discipline behind every performance.

Malia Elisabeth Kelly

Malia Elisabeth Kelly
Annual Fund Manager/Director of Operations
Virginia Arts Festival/Norfolk NATO Festival

Norfolk

Malia serves as annual fund manager for Virginia Arts Festival and director of operations for Norfolk NATO Festival. She manages donor cultivation and strategies that drive revenue, supporting one of the region’s largest cultural institutions while managing operations involving NATO, military leaders, international delegations, and government officials. She’s passionate about stakeholder relations and cross-cultural engagement work. Malia holds a bachelor’s in music from Hollins University and a master’s in arts administration, cultural outreach, and advocacy from the University of Denver. Malia is vice-chair of Downtown Norfolk Council’s DT100 Board, AFP’s National Philanthropy Day Board, and volunteers with Foodbank and United Way.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…stepping into the NATO Festival without ever seeing what this was. I was tasked with planning this large-scale, internationally focused event that I’d never seen before but I did it! The responsibility pushed me beyond my comfort zone, and I quickly learned the complexities of high-stakes event production. I transitioned from having limited knowledge of this event to coordinating the moving parts of an event centered on international diplomacy, cultural relations, and community engagement. Navigating this in an evolving political landscape was a learning curve, but the festival’s mission of fostering international friendship and mutual understanding remained the heart of every decision.

My next big goal is…to further advance the mission of the Virginia Arts Festival by expanding access to arts and educational opportunities for our community’s youth and beyond. I also hope to strengthen and grow Norfolk’s relationship with NATO and the international community while continuing to advocate for a vibrant, creative, and culturally connected region. I love Norfolk and Coastal Virginia as a whole so much! We have so much to offer here.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…be humble and grounded but also know your strengths and what you bring to the table. Balancing humility and self-awareness is so important.

Something not many people know about me is that…I have two Samoyeds that dictate my entire life! Buffalo and Moose. If you’re ever around Virginia Arts Festival, you’ll see Buffalo there. Most days, you’ll see Buffalo and Moose at Heron Ridge Golf Club!

Denys Kobzan

Denys Kobzan
Founder & CEO
Mr Fix Cell Phone & Computer Repair

Norfolk, Hampton, and Virginia Beach

Denys Kobzan is the founder and CEO of Mr Fix Cell Phone & Computer Repair, a Virginia-based technology repair company with multiple locations serving communities throughout the commonwealth. Originally from Kharkiv, Ukraine, Denys immigrated to the United States in 2015 and transformed his passion for technology and customer service into a growing business that helps thousands of customers each year. Under his leadership, Mr Fix has become known for its commitment to quality, innovation, and employee development. Denys is also an active volunteer with United Help Ukraine and regularly supports local organizations and nonprofit initiatives throughout the communities where Mr Fix operates.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…building a business that creates opportunities for people while serving our communities. When I arrived in the United States, I had to start from scratch, learn a new business environment, and prove myself every step of the way. What began as a single repair shop has grown into a company with multiple locations, an incredible team, and thousands of loyal customers. The accomplishment I value most is seeing employees grow professionally, develop confidence, and advance into leadership roles.

My next big goal is…to continue growing Mr Fix into one of the most respected technology service brands in Virginia while maintaining the culture and values that helped us succeed. I want to expand opportunities for our employees, strengthen our training programs, and develop future leaders within the company. My goal is to build an organization that creates long-term careers, delivers exceptional customer experiences, and leaves a lasting positive impact on the communities we serve.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…focus on what you can control, and do your best every day. Challenges, setbacks, and uncertainty are part of every entrepreneurial journey, but persistence and consistency often matter more than talent. Small improvements made every day can lead to extraordinary results over time.

Something not many people know about me is that…before becoming a business owner, I studied engineering and never imagined I would one day lead a growing company. The journey from technician to entrepreneur taught me that some of life’s greatest opportunities come from taking risks and embracing change.

Britt Lapiska

Britt Lapiska
Owner
Bird Girl Bottle Shop

Newport News

Britt Lapiska is the co-owner of Bird Girl Bottle Shop, a craft beer, wine, and artisan pizza spot nestled in the historic Hilton Village neighborhood of Newport News. Before leaping into entrepreneurship, Britt earned a degree in elementary and special education from Grand Canyon University and spent years in the classroom. She and her husband Derek transformed a corner house—once a doctor’s office—into a thriving community gathering place. Britt is a proud supporter of Hilton Village and an advocate for small business and nonprofits on the Peninsula and beyond, as well as always encouraging people to start their own small business because it has made her so happy.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…being brave and maybe a bit naive about jumping from educator to entrepreneur. I spent years in the classroom, and while teaching shaped so much of who I am, I always had a pull toward building something of my own. Opening Bird Girl Bottle Shop was the culmination of years of dreaming, planning, and a whole lot of chaos—including living in the building that would one day be Bird Girl with two small kids while we renovated it. On our very first day open, during the Hilton Village Fall Festival, we sold an unexpected 127 pizzas. That moment told me we had done something right—that all the sacrifices we had made were going to be worth it. I’m proud that our children watched and were such a huge part of the creation.

My next big goal is…to deepen the roots Bird Girl has already put down in Hilton Village by growing our community events programming. We opened this shop because we believe in the power of people coming together over good food and drink, and I want to be intentional about creating more opportunities for that to happen. Whether it’s neighborhood pop-ups, local maker markets, or partnering with other small businesses on experiences that bring new faces to Hopkins Street, I want Bird Girl to be known not just as a place you go, but as a place where things happen. Building community isn’t a side project for us—it’s the whole point.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…from my mom. I would call her when I was sad, overwhelmed, and feeling like I would die before we would open our doors officially because it was just so hard. She would always say, “Well, you painted yourself into a corner, and you will figure your way out.” Maybe it sounds brutal, but it was what I always needed to know that yeah, this is awful, but you have all that you need to get out of this and move forward. Just don’t give up, and go for it. I would also like to say that you can’t wait for the right time to make a change.

Something not many people know about me is that…the name “Bird Girl” traces back to high school, when I dressed as a bird for my role in the Jungle of Nool for a high school production of Seussical the Musical, where the director was going around and saying we could pick any animal to be. I chose a peacock—completely unaware I was naming my future business.

Darryl Liechti

Darryl Liechti
Owner & President
Collision Correction | SWAG Automotive | Shell Shine

Williamsburg

Darryl Liechti is the owner and president of Collision Correction, SWAG Automotive, and Shell Shine in Williamsburg. An award-winning entrepreneur, he has built businesses focused on collision repair, vehicle customization, branding, and automotive appearance services while emphasizing customer advocacy, craftsmanship, and community involvement. Darryl is a strong supporter of workforce development through vocational education, partnering with local schools to create career opportunities in the skilled trades. His companies have earned multiple regional business and industry awards, reflecting a commitment to innovation, integrity, and delivering exceptional customer experiences.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…building businesses that have become trusted names in our community while staying true to my values. Collision Correction has earned multiple regional awards, but what means the most is the reputation we’ve built by putting customers first and advocating for them when they need it most. I’m equally proud of creating opportunities for the next generation through vocational partnerships, mentoring young technicians, and watching apprentices grow into full-time professionals. Seeing our companies expand into new markets with SWAG Automotive and Shell Shine while maintaining a culture centered on integrity, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement has been the most rewarding part of my journey.

My next big goal is…to continue expanding each of my businesses while developing them into industry leaders across Coastal Virginia. I want to create even more career opportunities, strengthen our apprenticeship programs, and continue investing in the next generation of skilled trades professionals. Personally, I’m also working toward becoming a licensed independent vehicle appraiser so I can further advocate for consumers and help ensure they receive fair treatment throughout the insurance claims process.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…success isn’t about being the smartest person in the room—it’s about showing up consistently, treating people with respect, and never compromising your integrity. Skills can be taught, but character, work ethic, and the willingness to keep learning are what build lasting businesses and meaningful relationships.

Something not many people know about me is that…I thrive on mental and physical challenges and am passionate about continuous self-improvement. One of my proudest personal accomplishments was completing the Newport News One City Marathon in 2019. Crossing that finish line reinforced a lesson I carry into every aspect of my life and business—that discipline, resilience, and consistency can accomplish goals that once seemed impossible.

Jenny Lo

Jenny Lo
Owner & Registered Dietitian
Wellness & Sports Dietetics

Virginia Beach

Jenny Lo, MS, RDN, is the owner of Wellness & Sports Dietetics in Virginia Beach, where she provides evidence-based advanced nutrition care for individuals with complex medical needs.  She has a master’s degree in exercise science and human performance as well as bachelor’s degrees in human nutrition science and nuclear medicine. Jenny currently serves on the boards of the Virginia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the Tidewater Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and the ATP Foundation.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…building a thriving nutrition practice that is helping lead the way in advanced, inclusive nutrition care in Coastal Virginia. I founded Wellness & Sports Dietetics to provide evidence-based, highly individualized care for people of all identities, athletes, and those living with complex chronic conditions. I am especially proud to be one of the few private nutrition practices that accepts health insurance, making specialized care more accessible.

My next big goal is…to help make inclusive, trauma-informed, advanced evidence-based nutrition care the standard in the region. I hope to continue mentoring dietitians and collaborating with other providers to expand access to care that honors each person’s identity, lived experience, abilities, and medical complexity while supporting their full well-being.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…to be yourself; everyone else is already taken. To me, authenticity is a superpower. That advice has reminded me to lead with my values, build a career that reflects who I truly am, and create a practice rooted in compassion, inclusion, science, and genuine connection, which are core values.

Something not many people know about me is that…I have been ice climbing in the Khumbu Icefall on Mount Everest, a humbling adventure that reminded me how resilient I am, how much growth can happen outside our comfort zones, and how much I truly prefer warm weather.

Stephanie Luce
Controller & Training Manager
Breeden Construction

Virginia Beach

Stephanie Luce serves as controller and training manager at Breeden Construction, where she oversees financial operations, while leading employee training, onboarding, and professional development initiatives that strengthen organizational performance and culture. She also serves on the company’s LEAN Construction and Summer Internship Program committees. Stephanie earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Virginia Wesleyan College. Passionate about developing people and improving processes, she is recognized for fostering collaboration between finance and operations and creating meaningful opportunities for employee growth and engagement.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…creating and building our training program and helping develop a culture of inter-departmental collaboration in an industry where departments are often siloed, despite being on the same team. Our training mindset is that all our job functions are connected, and you can’t be the best at what you do without understanding how and why someone else does what they do. You can be amazing at your job, but being the best means that you are also putting in the time and effort to make everyone around you better, too.

My next big goal is…continuing to work collaboratively with all the different departments to streamline our systems and evolve as a company, while also helping the people that constantly support me reach all their professional goals on an individual level, too. I work with some of the best, most talented people who have been an amazing professional and personal support system for me. I love getting to do the same for them and being able to play a part in helping them grow, succeed, and get everything they deserve.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…no one cares. In the best way possible. Most people are more focused on themselves, their responsibilities, what they have going on, their insecurities. Don’t waste your energy carrying around and performing for an imaginary audience that only exists in your mind. Just be your most authentic self, try your best, be kind, and let the rest of it go.

Something not many people know about me is that…I enjoy listening to audiobooks, but I also still love to read and collect physical books.  I always search for Fear Street books at every used bookstore I visit, so I can complete my childhood collection.

Jessica Macalino

Jessica Macalino
President
Riverside Smithfield Hospital

Smithfield

Jessica Macalino, MSHA, FACHE, is president of Riverside Smithfield Hospital, where she has the privilege of serving alongside more than 300 team members dedicated to delivering exceptional care and service to the residents of Isle of Wight County and surrounding communities. In her role, she oversees hospital operations, quality and patient experience, strategic growth, and community partnerships. A Coastal Virginia native, Jessica earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and her master’s degree in health administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. Passionate about serving her community both inside and outside the hospital, she serves on the boards of the Western Tidewater Free Clinic, Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce, YMCA of the Virginia Peninsula, and Harbor Light Academy. She also serves as regent for Central Virginia with the American College of Healthcare Executives, helping advance and support healthcare leaders across the region.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…expanding access to healthcare for communities that need it most. I have always believed that healthcare is about meeting people where they are and ensuring they have equitable access to high quality, compassionate care close to home. The most rewarding part of my career has been the opportunity to serve others and help create environments where both patients and team members can thrive. When people ask what I do as a hospital president, my answer is always simple: I work for a team of incredible individuals who deliver exceptional care to our community every day. My job is to ensure they have the tools, resources, and support they need to care for others. There is no greater privilege than being part of a team united by a shared purpose and a passion for making a difference in the lives of patients and families.

My next big goal is…to continue growing as a leader in healthcare while expanding the impact we can make in the communities we serve. Beyond the hospital, I hope to continue giving back through service and advancing the healthcare profession.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…it is not the failure that defines you, but how you respond to it. Challenges, setbacks, and mistakes are inevitable in both life and leadership. Having the courage to own it, learn from it and move forward is what will always matter more than the failure itself. That advice has taught me the importance of resilience, humility, and grace, not only with myself but with others.

Something not many people know about me is that…although I was born and raised in Coastal Virginia, I spent five years in Fairbanks, Alaska, where I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Alaska and worked for the United States Air Force as a program coordinator for an operations squadron. It was there that I first learned the principles of high reliability and discovered the similarities between aviation and healthcare. Both industries depend on teamwork, communication, and a relentless commitment to safety.

She oversees curriculum development, grants, partnerships, and a team of educators delivering programs at the Dominion Energy Learning Barge and Paradise Creek Nature Park. Summer earned a B.S. in biology with a concentration in marine biology from Old Dominion University. She is passionate about expanding access to environmental education and inspiring the next generation of scientists, conservationists, and community leaders through meaningful outdoor learning experiences.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…the journey that brought me from a seasonal educator on the Learning Barge nearly 10 years ago to my current role as director of education at the Elizabeth River Project. Every position I held gave me a deeper appreciation for the work and the people behind it, from leading field trips and interacting with students to developing curriculum, writing grants, building partnerships, and leading a talented team of educators. That journey has shaped the way I lead today. I’m proud that I can still step onto the Learning Barge, connect with students, and remember exactly why I chose this career. Being able to help expand programs that now serve thousands of students each year while staying connected to the mission that inspired me from the beginning is something I never take for granted.

My next big goal is…to secure sustainable funding that ensures every student in Coastal Virginia has access to high-quality environmental education, regardless of their school’s resources. I want to continue building partnerships with school divisions, foundations, and community organizations to expand hands-on STEM learning and remove financial barriers to outdoor education. Every child deserves the opportunity to connect with nature and discover that they can make a difference in their community.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…don’t wait until you feel completely ready—say yes to opportunities that challenge you. Some of the biggest moments in my career happened because I stepped outside my comfort zone and trusted that I would figure things out along the way. Growth rarely happens where you’re comfortable.

Something not many people know about me is that…when I was in college, my dream job was to become an aquarist. A chance opportunity in informal environmental education completely changed my career path, and I’ve never looked back!

Andrew Nissman

Andrew Nissman
Senior Director of Development & Communications
Hampton Roads Workforce Council

Norfolk

Andrew Nissman is senior director of development and communications for the Hampton Roads Workforce Council, where he leads partnerships and initiatives that strengthen the region’s workforce and economy. He has secured more than $75 million in public and private investment supporting workforce development, military families, and youth programs across Southeastern Virginia. A Virginia Beach native, Andrew earned his MBA from the College of William & Mary and his bachelor’s degree from Dickinson College. He serves on the WHRO Governing Board of Directors and is an active volunteer focused on education and economic opportunity.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…the partnerships I have built with employers, educational institutions, local governments, and nonprofits to create meaningful opportunities for Hampton Roads residents. Working alongside regional stakeholders, I have helped secure transformational investments that strengthen our workforce, support economic development, and expand access to opportunity for community members. The most rewarding part of my work is seeing the tangible and lasting impact these collaborative efforts have on individuals, businesses, and communities throughout our region.

My next big goal is…to find and pursue new ways to help strengthen Hampton Roads’ regional identity and make our community an even better place to live, work, and play. Hampton Roads has extraordinary assets—we have world-class industries, incredible educational institutions, and a vibrant coastal lifestyle. We also have the opportunity to tell our story more effectively and foster a stronger shared identity. I want to help advance initiatives that enhance our region’s competitiveness and ensure Hampton Roads remains a destination where people and businesses choose to grow.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…never stop reading and learning. Shared by one of my favorite graduate school professors, this advice may seem trivial, but it fundamentally changed how I approach learning and growth. Although I’ve always been an avid fiction reader, it inspired me to explore subjects far beyond my usual interests, from geopolitics and technology to economics, culture, and even fashion. I’ve found that exposing myself to new topics and perspectives has made me a more curious, well-rounded thinker and a better leader.

Something not many people know about me is that… I’m a total ancient history nerd. Roman, Greek, Persian, or otherwise—I’m fascinated by all of it. I’m continually struck by how events and conflicts from thousands of years ago can offer remarkable insights into the world we live in today.

Charlie O’Brien

Charlie O’Brien
Co-Founder & CEO
LOGENTIQ Solutions

Norfolk

Charlie O’Brien is the co-founder and CEO of LOGENTIQ Solutions, where he supports founders through strategic advice and executional support powered by the company’s flagship platform, Clairvoya. He leads company strategy, partnership development, product vision, and sales. Charlie studied psychology, economics, and computer science at McGill University. He is a founding member and chair of the Hampton Roads Gen Z Commission, serves as membership chair on the board of the Future of Hampton Roads, and serves on the board of The Greater Norfolk Corporation.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…taking the jump to become a full-time entrepreneur at 24. That decision changed the way I see myself. It forced me to stop waiting for permission, stop assuming leadership belonged to someone else, and start building the future I wanted to be part of. I am proud of building LOGENTIQ Solutions alongside my partner, Luke Scrivanich, and developing an offer that is beginning to scale. I am also proud of helping build the Hampton Roads Gen Z Commission with an incredible team, including Nihal Vasty, whose leadership has helped prove that young people are not just the future of this region, we are part of its present.

My next big goal is…to keep proving that the work can scale. At LOGENTIQ Solutions, that means growing the business to $250,000 in recurring revenue and continuing to build Clairvoya into a platform that helps founders accelerate their vision to reality. Through the Hampton Roads Gen Z Commission, it means growing our community to 100 young leaders, building partnerships with regional organizations around the issues that matter most to Gen Z in Hampton Roads, and securing the funding needed to hire a full-time executive director.

The best piece of advice I have ever received…came from my mom, who taught me that I could do anything I put my mind to. I carry that with me constantly. Entrepreneurship is difficult, and there are many days when the weight of what I am trying to build feels bigger than me. But that advice reminds me that hard does not mean impossible. I want other young people to know that whatever they dream of doing, they can do it if they are willing to take the jump and keep going.

Something not many people know about me is that…I grew up playing Magic: The Gathering and still play occasionally. I have always loved games that reward strategy, creativity, and systems thinking.

Grayson Orsini is a real estate attorney and civic leader focused on housing, development, and the future growth of Coastal Virginia. As a senior associate at Williams Mullen, he advises developers, lenders, landlords, and property owners on commercial real estate transactions, affordable housing developments, and renewable energy projects across the region. He earned his law degree from the University of Richmond and lives in Norfolk with his wife, son, his cat, and his dog.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…building a career where I can connect my work directly to advocating for a better future in our region. As a real estate lawyer, I have helped clients build projects that matter for our region’s future, including affordable housing and renewable energy developments. The knowledge I have gained from my work has allowed me to shape conversations about housing affordability and regional growth through groups like YIMBY Hampton Roads, the Greater Norfolk Corporation, and Norfolk’s Mayor’s Housing Commission. Using my skills to support projects and policies that can improve the region has been especially meaningful.

My next big goal is…to continue growing as both a real estate attorney and civic leader while helping Coastal Virginia address some of its most important long-term challenges. Housing affordability, economic competitiveness, and quality of life will play a major role in shaping our future, and I hope to contribute practical solutions that help the region thrive. Over time, I want to take on greater leadership responsibilities and help build a stronger, more vibrant Coastal Virginia for the next generation.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…how you say something matters just as much as what you say. The right answer only helps if people can hear it, understand it, and do something with it.

Something not many people know about me is that…my dog Rooster is a retired racing greyhound. He won exactly one race during his career, and I am probably more proud of that victory than he is!

Dr. Kendra Robinson

Dr. Kendra Robinson
Founder & CEO
The Community Outreach Coalition

Portsmouth

Dr. Kendra Robinson is the founder and CEO of the Community Outreach Coalition (COC), a regional nonprofit dedicated to increasing educational attainment and economic mobility throughout Hampton Roads. Since founding COC as a teenager in 2008, she has grown the organization into a multi-program agency serving thousands of youth and adults through college access, workforce development, and community outreach initiatives. Dr. Robinson holds a Doctor of Business Administration from Liberty University, an MBA from the University of Phoenix, and a bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State University. She serves on numerous community advisory committees focused on education, workforce development, and economic opportunity.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…starting the Community Outreach Coalition at 18 years old and watching it grow from a small grassroots effort into a regional organization serving thousands of individuals each year. As a first-generation college student, I understood firsthand how access, exposure, and opportunity can change a person’s future. Today, COC provides workforce training, college access services, STEM education, and community support programs throughout Hampton Roads. The accomplishment I am most proud of is not a specific award or milestone, but seeing participants secure employment, enroll in college, earn certifications, and create better futures for themselves and their families.

My next big goal is…to build a sustainable national organization that serves more than 25,000 individuals annually while reducing barriers to education and economic opportunity. I am particularly focused on expanding workforce development initiatives, strengthening career pathways for youth, and creating innovative models that connect education directly to employment. I also want to continue developing the next generation of nonprofit and community leaders who will help strengthen our region for years to come.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…“Don’t wait for permission to solve a problem.” That advice encouraged me to stop focusing on what resources I lacked and instead focus on what I could do with the resources and relationships available to me. It continues to shape how I lead today.

Something not many people know about me is that…outside of my work, I love visiting farms. What started as a personal interest has evolved into a passion for helping farmers navigate grant opportunities and business planning so they can build sustainable operations and continue feeding and strengthening our communities.

I’ve been intentional about creating opportunities for connection, mentorship, and development, helping others gain confidence and find their place in the industry. At the same time, I’m proud of the commitment it has taken to reach this point, including earning my master’s degree while balancing full-time work, motherhood, and active board and community involvement. Those experiences have shaped my leadership style and reinforced my passion for lifting others as I grow.

My next big goal is…to continue expanding my leadership influence, both within my organization and across the broader insurance community. I’m focused on strengthening my ability to mentor others, drive strategic growth, and help shape the industry’s future. I also want to deepen my expertise in complex risk solutions to continue delivering high-impact results for clients.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…to be authentically yourself in every room you walk into. Early in my career, I learned that credibility doesn’t come from trying to fit a mold; it comes from showing up with confidence, curiosity, and integrity. That advice has helped me build stronger relationships, take thoughtful risks, and stay grounded in what matters most.

Something not many people know about me is that…I find a lot of my clarity and creativity through yoga. It’s not just a hobby, it’s a personal reset that helps me stay balanced, focused, and energized both professionally and personally.

Jacob Trent
Senior Vice President, Senior Commercial Relationship Manager
Fulton Bank

Virginia Beach

Jacob Trent is a senior vice president and senior commercial relationship manager with Fulton Bank, partnering with businesses across Coastal Virginia to provide financing and strategic guidance that supports growth and long-term success. Since beginning his banking career in 2013, he has advised companies across a variety of industries on capital needs and key financial decisions. Jacob holds a business administration degree from the University of Lynchburg and an MBA from Liberty University. He serves on the Board of Directors for First Tee–Hampton Roads, is a member of LEAD757 Class of 2023, and remains actively engaged in the Hampton Roads community.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…the relationships I have built and the positive impact those relationships have created. While banking is often viewed as a business of numbers and transactions, I believe its true purpose is helping people achieve their goals. Over the years, I have worked alongside entrepreneurs and business owners as they expanded operations, acquired companies, invested in real estate, and created jobs throughout Coastal Virginia. I have also found great fulfillment in mentoring younger professionals and helping them grow in confidence and capability.

My next big goal is…to help develop the next generation of bankers, business professionals, and business owners who will shape the future of our region. Having benefited from mentors who generously shared their knowledge and experience, I am passionate about paying that forward through mentorship, leadership, and service. Coastal Virginia has a strong entrepreneurial spirit, and I enjoy supporting those who are building businesses and strengthening our communities.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…focus on serving others first. Trust is earned through consistency, integrity, and a genuine desire to help people succeed. I have also learned the importance of staying curious and committed to continuous learning, as growth often begins with asking thoughtful questions and remaining open to new perspectives.

Something not many people know about me is that…I played collegiate golf and remain active in the game today. I still enjoy the challenge, competition, and lessons the game provides. I also enjoy history and exploring the rich historical resources and landmarks throughout Coastal Virginia. Living in a region with such a unique connection to our nation’s history has given me a greater appreciation for the people, events, and stories that helped shape our community and country.

Davis R. Watson

Davis R. Watson
Head of Digital Delivery—Infrastructure
Ferguson Enterprises, Inc.

Chesapeake

Davis R. Watson is the head of infrastructure digital delivery at Coastal Virginia-based Ferguson Enterprises, a Fortune 500 company, where he leads national digital delivery and engineering platform initiatives supporting large-scale water, utility, and public infrastructure programs. He holds an MBA from Longwood University, a bachelor’s degree from Old Dominion University, and an associate degree from Tidewater Community College. Davis serves on the City of Chesapeake South Norfolk Revitalization Commission and has supported workforce and community initiatives through Tidewater Community College, the Virginia Medical Reserve Corps, Ferguson’s Community and Sustainability Committee, and The National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…helping build and scale Ferguson’s national Waterworks Digital Delivery organization into a platform that supports major infrastructure programs across North America. The work has grown from approximately $100 million in supported annual delivery to more than $675 million, with continued momentum toward $1 billion. I am proud of the business growth, but even more proud of the teams behind it. Together, we have built new operating models, strengthened coordination between engineering, procurement, construction, and field execution, and helped deliver critical water and utility infrastructure communities rely on every day. It has reinforced for me that innovation matters most when it improves real-world execution and strengthens the people doing the work.

My next big goal is…to keep advancing how complex infrastructure is delivered at scale. The next phase of my work is focused on digital delivery systems that make large capital programs more coordinated, predictable, and field-ready. I want to help bridge the gap between strategy and execution by building teams, workflows, and technology platforms that improve outcomes for owners, contractors, and communities. Long term, I hope to contribute to a more resilient infrastructure future while developing the next generation of leaders.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…to build the system, not just solve the immediate problem. Early in my career, I thought leadership meant being able to fix what was in front of me. Over time, I learned that lasting impact comes from creating the structure, clarity, and trust that allow other people to solve bigger problems together. That advice continues to shape how I lead.

Something not many people know about me is that…my kids think I build water towers. When they point one out and ask if I helped build it, I usually say, “Yes, kind of.” In many ways, they are not entirely wrong.

Quincy A. White

Quincy A. White
President & Chief Executive Officer
Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation

Virginia Beach

Quincy A. White is the president and Chief Executive Officer of the Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation, where he leads efforts to expand affordable housing, strengthen neighborhoods, and connect residents to supportive services that promote long-term stability. He has 18 years of experience in housing, homelessness response, and community development, with previous leadership roles in local government and nonprofit organizations, including serving as chief housing officer for the Town of Hilton Head Island and executive director of Four Oaks Day Service Center. Quincy is a graduate of the University of Lynchburg, a member of the Lead 757 Class of 2026, and remains active in community leadership through board and committee service focused on housing, literacy, and family stability.

So far in my career, I am most proud of…being able to build a career around serving marginalized communities and helping create pathways to housing stability, dignity, and opportunity. I’ve had the privilege of leading initiatives that expand affordable housing, support individuals and families experiencing homelessness, and strengthen systems that help people move toward long-term self-sufficiency. I’m also proud to have started Mercy Movers, a nonprofit free moving company for individuals experiencing homelessness that provides moving services at no cost. For me, the most meaningful part of this work is knowing it can remove barriers, restore dignity, and create a stronger foundation for families and communities.

My next big goal is…to help position VBCDC for its next phase of growth by expanding our housing impact, strengthening our financial sustainability, and deepening partnerships that allow us to serve more families across Virginia Beach. I want to continue building an organization that is both mission-driven and operationally strong.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…to lead with both courage and humility. Courage is necessary to make hard decisions, push for change, and stay focused on the mission. Humility is what keeps you teachable, grounded, and connected to the people you serve.

Something not many people know about me is that…I am a family man, and that identity shapes both how I lead and why I do this work. It’s important to me to contribute to building the kind of world I hope my daughter will grow up in—one rooted in opportunity, stability, and compassion. My passion for service is deeply personal, and much of my work has been shaped by a genuine belief that stable housing can change the trajectory of a family for generations.
