Jillian Talley-Millennial on the Move

What is something that makes you stand out professionally?

Through previous positions that I have held, I have acquired a unique skill set that makes me a well-rounded and versatile individual. My ability to be an effective communicator and have great attention to detail has allowed me to flourish in the various positions that I have held.

Who or what keeps you motivated or inspires you?

My parents keep me motivated. Both of my parents have strong work ethics, and they have instilled in me and my siblings that you should live your life with integrity, honesty and hard work while be a productive member of the community you live in.

Tell us about an accomplishment that you’re proud of.

I am very proud of the work that I do with the YWCA South Hampton Roads. I oversee the adopt-a-room program. The adopt-a-room program is one of our done-in-a-day volunteer opportunities where community members can adopt a room at our emergency shelter.

How do you feel your industry can best respond to the effects of COVID-19?

The nonprofit industry will continue to rise to the challenges that are facing our local community. The YWCA South Hampton Roads is rising to the challenge by adapting our programs and services to continue supporting victims of violence in our community. Domestic violence often escalates during and after a disaster, and experts have warned that we will see a spike in domestic violence fueled by anxiety, stay-at-home orders and economic uncertainty.

What new idea or development are you excited about in Coastal Virginia?

I am looking forward to the opening of a new Norfolk development called The Railyard. It will have a bowling alley, brewery, restaurants and retail space. I think that it will add another fun attraction for people to go to.

What’s the most important aspect you look for in a workplace?

When looking at a workplace, I look for a positive work environment that promotes professional development and opportunities for growth. As a young professional it is important that I am allowed the flexibility to grow my skill sets as I continue on in my career.

What would you be doing if you weren’t in your current position?

I would still be working in the nonprofit world. I have a passion for community development and working for a nonprofit allows you to be at the forefront of fixing the challenges that any given community is facing.

What’s your favorite spot to relax in Coastal Virginia?

Farmhouse Brewing in Virginia Beach. The atmosphere is beautiful yearlong. They have weekly wine specials, bonfires, seasonal brews and it is the perfect place for me to go to with my chocolate lab, Raegan.
