Wayne Holcomb, president/managing partner/owner of Holcomb Law PC, left a large law firm in Virginia Beach to start his own firm on the Peninsula. He was a family law mediator for years before he even went to law school, so he was confident he could start a successful family law practice. But he wanted to do things a little differently. “I was trying to get a family law firm working in the community that wasn’t full-blown, blood-letting litigation,” he says. “It’s kind of like adding insult to injury when you bring lawyers—whose job is to zealously represent their clients, which is what we’re trained to do—into something like a divorce or child custody setting. It just didn’t seem like the right approach to me. So, I started my firm with the approach that we needed to get something different working for families. We tried to really downplay the angst. Our tagline is ‘Changing the way Hampton Roads thinks about law firms,’ and that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Part one of his plan started with how they would treat their clients and prospects. “Before we really focused on our staff, we decided we want to make coming to see your lawyer the opposite of how you feel when you’re going to see your dentist on root canal day. We have snacks. We have drinks and coffee. We meet our clients at the door. We want people to know it’s OK to come here.”

However, Holcomb also knew that to be able to provide the kind of service he wanted for his clients, he was going to need to find very special team members that could understand his vision and project that to people seeking the firm’s assistance. “You can’t focus first of all on your personal bottom line in your business. That’s why most small businesses go under, I think. You need to stay focused on building your team and your business. If you find the right people, invest in them. It might be expensive, but you need to do it. If you honor and value your people’s skills, you’ll get a lot of good results from them. Especially if they are not used to being honored and appreciated.”

Why I Love My Job

“This place is amazing. I have been here over six years, and every day I get excited to come to work. Wayne makes sure that we all feel we have a voice, and he is always open to new ways to show the employees how much we mean to him. I appreciate that he goes above and beyond to show us how valued we are. Even the part-timers are considered family. It is unlike anywhere else I have worked. It’s a feeling you get the moment you walk into the office. We genuinely care about our clients, and I strongly feel it’s because we are cared about as well. I truly believe the work we do matters on more than just a law firm level.” —Kelly LaRue, Office Leader and Director of Marketing, six years with Holcomb Law PC
